McBEE – The McBee High School varsity football team has encountered a few injury issues this season, but the team had one of its best outings in recent years Friday night as they decimated the North Central Knights by a score of 62-16.
The Knights received the ball to begin the game, but the Panthers quickly forced a punt. McBee only needed one play to score.
On the Panthers first play from scrimmage, Justin Bristow received the handoff from quarterback Russell Horton and scampered 43 yards for a touchdown. The 2-point conversion made the score 8-0 with 10:21 left to play in the first quarter.
On the Knights’ second drive, they fumbled and McBee recovered. Once again, on the first play of the drive Bristow went 29 yards for another score. The points after gave McBee a 16-0 lead.
McBee would continue to dominate.
At the end of the first quarter of play, McBee led 32-0.
The Panthers got great performances from Bristow and Quan Murphy in the backfield, and McBee’s young offensive line cleared holes for the two running backs to run through all night long.
McBee’s defense also held the Knights to just two scores on the night.
McBee head coach Terry Sowell was surprised by the fervor with which the Panthers began the game. “I never thought that,” he said of the team’s 32 points in the first quarter. “We just wanted to go in and play well and win. I didn’t think it was going to be like that. (Friday) was a must-win for us.”
Sowell also said he was pleased that everyone who dressed out for the team got to play in the game. He also said the team had to make some adjustments for the injuries to Greg McDonald and Scotty Sanders. Tight end Brian Lewis was moved to guard to help shore up the Panthers’ front line, and Sowell said Lewis performed well.
The coach believes that shifting players around and getting good performances out of them is helping the team learn more about itself.
The Panthers will face Indian Land on Friday and will take on Buford on Oct. 17. They will have the following week off before they face the defending Class A state champion Chesterfield Rams on Oct. 31.
Sowell believes the team must make it through the next two games injury free. If they can, that will give the team an opportunity to notch a better finish in the region and give their injured players a chance to heal before the playoffs.
The Panthers will host Indian Land at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10.
