The Hartsville High School cross-country teams ran against eight teams at Freedom Florence on Tuesday. Four of those teams were region competitors.
The boys finished in second place among all eight teams. Their only loss came to West Florence. The girls’ team finished in sixth place.
The girls were led by junior Jaclyn Warden, who finished in second place overall with a time of 21:52. Her time was nine seconds behind the first runner. Erin Farrell finished in 26:47 for the ladies in 16th position. Also for the girls, Paige Wallace finished in a time of 30:06. Laura Ritchie and Kendra Gordon finished in 35:18 and 36:38, respectively.
The boys’ team was without one of its top runners in the meet. Hartsville’s Brad Freeman has an injured foot. The extent of his injury is unknown at this point.
Allen Ownley led the boys finishing in fifth place in a time of 19:41. Zach Henderson finished in ninth place with a time of 20:13, and David Leeth finished in 10th in 20:17. Barron Windham finished in 15th position for the Runnin’ Red Foxes with a time of 20:46, and Andrew McCall rounded out the scoring in 17th position in 20:58.
The second-place finish improves Hartsville’s record to an impressive 14-1 on the season and 6-1 in region play.
“Times were slower than usual due to the extreme muddy condition of the course through the woods,” head coach Buster Freeman said. “All the runners looked like they had been playing in a mud bath when they crossed the finish line.”
The team will be back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Florence against runners from South and West Florence high schools.
