Knights ready for playoffs

West Florence’s 31 seniors have a great deal to be proud of this football season.
They’ve never lost to South Florence, posted consecutive wins against Hartsville and ended a three-game losing streak to Wilson.
One thing the Knights have never done is win a Class 4A playoff game. But they will get another chance Friday night.
West, seeded 14th, will face Rock Hill’s South Pointe in the opening round of the Class 4A Division II playoffs at 7:30 p.m.
“It’s the highest seed this school’s ever gotten, and we’re proud of that,” Knights coach Trey Woodberry said Saturday. “South Pointe isn’t a typical No. 3 seed. They’re one of the best teams in the state, if not the nation.”
South Pointe features DeVonte Holloman, a former Clemson commitment and USC commitment Stephon Gilmore.
West also is stacked with
Division I talent with four commitments: linebacker Avery Murray defensive ends Malliciah Goodman and Sydney Sarmiento and offensive lineman Jon Coleman.
But Woodberry is equally proud of the improvement in his offense heading into the playoffs, particularly with the play of quarterback Paul Pizzuti.
Pizzuti threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for another the Knights’ 49-14 rout of South Florence on Friday night.
Paul has really turned the corner this season. All of our kids are playing great at the right time,” Woodberry said. “Plus, our players are pretty healthy right now, and that’s a good thing.”
Hartsville, on the other hand, will be watching the Class 4A postseason from home. Needing a win over Sumter and some help to reach the playoffs, the Red Foxes lost 62-26 to Sumter.
Rematches dominate the second round of the Class A playoffs. After getting coach Jim Woods his first postseason victory, Timmonsville will get a chance at revenge when it travels to Scott’s Branch in the Class A Division II lower state bracket.
The Eagles beat the Whirlwinds 38-18 in the team’s first meeting on Oct. 17.
Another team looking to avenge an Oct. 17 loss is Hannah-Pamplico. The Red Raiders shocked top-seeded Baptist Hill in the first round of the Class A Division I bracket, and now look to toppling Lamar.
The Silver Foxes nearly squandered a 14-point first-half advantage en routo to holding off Hannah-Pamplico 14-12.
Carvers Bay, the defending Class A Division I lower state champions, set its sights on getting back to Orangeburg when the Bears head to Region 8-A rival Hemingway.
The Tigers pulled out a 13-8 win Sept. 26 and look to advance out of the second round for the first time since 2004.
