WILSON, N.C. — A day after Steve Grife’s two-hit performance on the mound for Florence, the RedWolves had the tables turned on the them at Wilson.
The Tobs’ Tim Adleman turned in a complete-game performance, tossing six perfect innings before finally giving up just one run on two hits as Wilson edged the RedWolves 2-1 on Friday.
“Tim threw the ball well,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “He was locating with the fastball and had good stuff tonight, and kept our guys off balance.”
Despite collecting just two hits, the RedWolves were still in the game thanks in large part to starter Rob Kumbatovic. Kumbatovic (0-1) allowed two runs on six hits in eight innings of work.
“Rob threw exceptionally well against a good offensive club in Wilson,” Davis said. “We didn’t have any base runners and were still in the game. Hopefully, we’ll get him some more run support next time.”
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh inning, Blake Walker’s RBI knotted the game at 1. Myckie Lugbauer was the only other RedWolf to record a hit.
In the bottom of the eighth, Jerry Sands hit the game-winner for Wilson, a solo home run. Adleman shut the door in the ninth, winding up with 13 strikeouts.
“The guys dug deep and tied the game late, but one swing of the bat allowed Wilson to rally and come out on top,” Davis said.
The RedWolves will host Wilmington tonight at 7:30.
