Hartsville High School has seen its fair share of athletes move on to the college ranks. On Thursday, May 29, two more athletes made the jump.
Trevor Cassidy and Lee Tyner signed their intent to play baseball for Erskine College in Due West.
Cassidy was the team leader in batting average for the season and was named to the all-region team.
Tyner was the starting catcher all season long and came up with some big hits in clutch situations.
Both athletes used one-word answers to describe the feelings that accompany being able to continue playing baseball.
“Honored,” said Cassidy.
“Awesome,” Tyner said.
“[Erskine] felt like a place I wanted to be,” Tyner said of his choice. “It seemed a lot like our team here.”
They had just finished their senior exams and were all smiles at the signing. “We’re done,” Tyner said of his schoolwork as he leaned back in his chair.
However, the students reflected when asked what they would miss about Hartsville.
“Putting on a Hartsville jersey,” Tyner said. “The red and black.”
Both players also felt as if they were prepared for the move by their time as Red Foxes. “We’ll get some time [at Erskine] before school starts,” Cassidy said. “So we can get in there and get fitted in well.”
“I think the coaches have prepared us well,” said Tyner.
Cassidy and Tyner both wanted to thank their parents and the coaches at Hartsville High School for the guidance and leadership they received while in school.
As athletes for the Flying Fleet, Cassidy and Tyner will make a few stops per year in Hartsville to play the Coker Cobras baseball team in Conference Carolinas play.
