Myrtle Beach, S.C. - It took a three run explosion in the top of the ninth for the Pelicans to earn the sweep over the Frederick Keys in the 6-3 win. The sweep marks only the second time Myrtle Beach has pulled it off, the last came in the early part of the month against the Wilmington Blue Rocks.
The Pelicans got on the board first in the top of the second. Ernesto Mejia led off the frame with a single. After two outs were recorded, Chad Lundahl moved Mejia into scoring position with a single. Then, Robert Marcial hit a clutch two out double to right field that gave the Pelicans a 1-0 lead.
The Keys responded in the bottom of the second, as Todd Davison singled to left to score Christopher Vinyard.
Back-to-back doubles by Brandon Hicks and Willie Cabrera triggered the Pelicans regaining a 2-1 advantage in the third.
Willie Cabrera, who went 2-5 with three RBIs, came through again in the fifth inning to stretch the Pelicans lead to 3-1. Travis Jones started the frame by drawing a walk. He moved to second on a balk. After Brandon Hicks placed a sacrifice bunt to move Jones to third, Cabrera ripped a double to center field to score Jones.
The Keys used the long ball in the late innings to fight their way back. In the seventh, Chris Amador hit his fourth home run of the season to cut the Pelicans lead to 3-2. Then in the eighth, Vinyard launched his fifth homer of the season over the left field wall to tie the game at 3-3.
Robert Marcial, who went 3-4, ignited the charge in the ninth inning with an infield single. Yohan Silva then followed suit with a single of his own that put runners at first and second with one out. The next hitter, Travis Jones, joined the hit party with a run scoring single that gave the Pelicans a 4-3 lead. With Silva at third and Jones at second, reliever Ryan Ouellette committed a costly balk that forced home Silva. The Pelicans tacked on another insurance run on a Willie Cabrera groundout that scored Jones.
Bryan Dumesnil came on in the ninth to pick up his third save of the season. Although Dumesnil walked two batters, he wound up striking out the side.
Pelicans starter Kyle Cofield went five strong innings, scattering five hits and allowing zero earned runs. Nick Fellman replaced Cofield in the sixth and carried the Pelicans into the eighth. Kelvin Villa took over and picked up his second win of the season in only one inning of work.
