FREDERICK, MD - Ernesto Meija swatted two home runs to help Scott Diamond win his Carolina League debut as the Pelicans beat the Keys 8-4.
Diamond delivered six strong innings infront of a crowd of more than 8,500 at Harry Grove Stadium, allowing just two runs on six hits to pick a debut win.
For the first time in four games, the Pelicans struck first, plating the game's first run in the third inning. Yohan Silva led off with a double off of Keys' starter Zach Clark. Silva advanced to third on a fly out from Travis Jones and scored on a wild pitch from Clark to make it 1-0 Myrtle Beach.
The Pelicans increased their lead with two runs in the fourth inning. One came in conventional fashion as Mejia blasted his fifth home run of the season over the left field wall. The second run of the inning scored in an odd way, as Jon Mark Owings sent a swinging bunt single up the third base line to reach safely. Phillip Britton followed with an infield single up the third base line as well, and as the Keys threw the ball all over the infield, Owings scored to make it 3-0.
The Keys got one back off of Diamond in the bottom of the inning. The rally came with two down, as Brandon Tripp doubled to the right field alley and scored as Brandon Snyder singled back up the middle to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Pelicans tacked the run back on immediately, plating Jones in the fifth. Jones had led off with a double off of Clark and advanced to third on an error on left fielder Chris Amador. Willie Cabrera brought him home with a groundout to third base for a 4-1 Pelicans' lead.
Jon Mark Owings crushed his fifth home run of the season in the sixth inning, but Frederick got the run back on Snyder's second RBI-single of the ballgame to close back to a three-run deficit.
Mejia wasn't done however, and the Pelicans iced the ballgame in the seventh inning. Brandon Hicks started a two-out rally against Keys' reliever JP Martinez with a double off the wall in left-center field and scored on a Cabrera single. Then, Mejia launched his second home run of the night to left field to put the birds up, 8-2. Mejia tied Frederick's Matt Wieters for the league-lead in RBIs with the blast, the second in the Carolina League with 30 runs batted in.
Tripp cracked a two-run homer to right field off of Brett Butts in the eighth inning to cap the scoring, but Butts worked three innings behind Diamond to earn his sixth save of the season. Butts struck out four, including the side in order in the ninth.
