Pelicans come back to salvage finale vs. Indians

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Pelicans made sure there would be no clean sweep at BB&T Coastal Field. The Birds salvaged the finale of their three game set with Kinston by scoring six consecutive runs, to win 6-5.

The Kinston Indians tallied one run in each of the first three innings. In the first, Jared Goedert blistered a double that scored Nick Weglarz, who singled. The K-Tribe worked across their second run in the second, courtesy of back-to-back base knocks by Jason Denham and Cirilo Cumberbatch. The lead grew to 3-0 in the third on a two out double by Carlos Rivero to score Beau Mills.

The K-Tribe attempted to reenact game two’s drubbing as they added two more in the fourth. Cumberbatch ignited the troops with a single to start the frame. A double by Alex Castillo moved Cumberbatch to third base. Beau Mills then hit a deep sacrifice fly to right that gave the K-Tribe a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jared Goedert brought home Castillo on a single into center field.

Seemingly down and out, the Pelicans were reenergized in the fourth. The ‘Birds loaded the bases with two down for Concepcion Rodriguez, who proceeded to hit a missile up the middle that brought home Willie Cabrera and Ernesto Mejia.

The Pelicans weren’t done as they tied the score in the fifth inning. After Yohan Silva led off with a double, Travis Jones clobbered his fifth home run of the season into Land Shark Landing to trim the lead to 5-4. Following an Ernesto Mejia double, Brandon Powell hit a single to score Mejia.

The Pelicans scored the eventual game winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Jones led off the frame with a double down the left field line. After a balk was committed by reliever Neil Wagner, Willie Cabrera sent a screaming line drive over the head of Cumberbatch in right to bring home Jones and give the Pelicans a 6-5 edge.
The improbable turnaround by the Pelicans snaps their season-long four game losing streaks.

Ferdin Tejeda picked up the win in 3.1 dominating innings. He allowed only one hit in blanking the K-Tribe. Bryan Dumesnil took over with one out in the eighth and wrapped up the save. The two relievers combined to allow just one hit over the final five innings.

The Pelicans begin a seven game road trip with a 7:00 p.m. tilt against the Frederick Keys on Friday. The Pelicans will send RHP Deunte Heath (5-2, 2.89) to the mound as the Keys will counter with RHP Brandon Erbe (4-3, 5.10).
