Nothing OK about Pelicans loss to K-Tribe

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans surrendered a season high 13 runs as they lost 13-2 in game two of their series with Kinston. The Birds allowed 7 runs in the seventh inning, a season high record for runs allowed in an inning.

The K-Tribe opened the scoring early as Nick Weglarz launched a home run off the video-board in left-center field to give Kinston a 1-0 advantage.

Kinston again went to the big fly in the sixth inning. After a single by Jared Goedert started with a single, Carlos Rivero hit an opposite field home run into Land Shark Landing to stretch the lead to 3-0.

The lead was further extended in the seventh inning as Nick Weglarz registered another RBI as he brought home Johnny Drennen, who led off the frame with a double. The K-Tribe tacked on one more to build a 5-0 lead.

The Pelicans put a run on the scoreboard in their half of the seventh. Ernesto Mejia rocketed a double to right field. After advancing to third, he was brought home on a sacrifice fly by Concepcion Rodriguez to cut the deficit to 5-1.

Everything went array for the Pelicans in the eighth inning as they allowed the K-Tribe to construct a 13-1 advantage on the strength of seven runs. Three different Pelicans pitchers (Nick Fellman, Carlos Rivas and Jeff Lyman) were forced to throw in the most destructive single inning of the season for Pelicans pitching. The K-Tribe sent 13 batters to the plate and muscled five hits while the Pelicans aided their cause with two errors.

K-Tribe starter Carlton Smith was tremendous in six innings of play, earning his second win of the season, while allowing just three hits. Although Pelicans starter Ryne Reynoso failed to factor into the decision, he put together a commendable five innings of work, surrendering just two hits and one run.

In the ninth, the Pelicans added their second run of the game on a Brandon Hicks moon-shot over the Land Shark Landing. Hicks is now second in the Carolina League with eight home runs.

In an effort to save his bullpen, Pelicans Manager Rocket Wheeler turned to utility infielder Chad Lundahl in the ninth inning. In only his third professional appearance on the hill, Lundahl dispatched of the K-Tribe in order.

The Pelicans try to salvage the series on Thursday, May 22nd at 7:05 PM. The Pelicans will send RHP Chris Vines (2-0, 0.66) to the hill, while Kinston will counter with RHP Jeanmar Gomez (2-5, 5.45).
