COLUMBIA – The Lamar boys’ and girls’ track teams took its show to the state track meet. Both teams finished as the state runners up for 2008.
The girls’ team was able to bring home a few individual state champions.
Alicia Mack won the 100M hurdles competition and Keisha Green is the state champion for the shot put.
Subrina Solomon, Quanecia Allen, Melkya Thomas and Alicia Mack also won the state in the 4 x 400M relay.
Allen also notched second place finishes in the 200M and 400M hurdles.
Kiera Brown took home a silver medal in the pole vault, and Mack garnered a silver medal in the 400M.
The Lady Silver Foxes came up 2 and one half points short and finished second to Johnsonville High School.
The boys’ team finished in second place as well. They have now either finished in first or second place for the past 11 years, according to head coach Charlie Poole.
“Having only a relay team and a 400M hurdler returning from last year’s state meet, we knew going in the task before us was huge this year,” Poole said.
“However, with a lot of hard work and determination to carry on the winning tradition that’s been established here, several athletes joined the elite club of state qualifiers again this year.”
Poole added he felt this year’s performance was outstanding because Lamar did not win a single event, but was still able to finish as state runners up.
“We were trailing Landrum for the second spot going into the final event,” Poole said.
“The 1600M relay team rose to the occasion and finished well ahead of Landrum in the event to secure the runner up trophy.”
Poole was excited about the opportunities the future holds.
“Coaching this team this season presented a few more challenges than in previous years because of our youth, but that is a good problem to have,” said Poole.
“To see an athlete grow from being inexperienced to state qualifier during the course of one season always makes you feel like you’re doing something right. This year, like all others, has brought many memories that will never be forgotten. It has been a great pleasure working with these young men this year.”
