DILLON — Dillon cut Gilbert’s lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but a home run in the top of the sixth put the Indians up three and they held on for the 4-1 win in game one of the 2A baseball finals Monday.
The second game of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Wednesday at Gilbert.
Gilbert’s Kyle Owings (8-1) got the complete-game win, allowing only three hits, while Jay Harrison took the loss. Harrison also pitched a complete game while surrendering just five hits.
Dillon’s lone run came in the bottom of the fifth.
Philip Herring doubled and was then lifted for a pinch-runner. A sacrifice bunt later brought up Will Celmer, who knocked in the run on an infield hit.
The Wildcats’ only other threat came when they left the bases loaded in the first inning.
