DARLINGTON — Move over Tony Stewart and Carl Edwards.
It looks like there is a new postrace celebration in NASCAR.
Kyle Busch, bows to the crowd on top of his door after emerging from the smoke following his celebratory burnout.
“It’s, ‘Thank you very much,’” Busch said Saturday after winning the Dodge Challenger 500. “I get out of there, and then I’m up on top, I hear, ‘Yeah,’ and then I do the bow. And then I go on and say, ‘Have a nice day.’”
Busch’s new celebration impressed Carl Edwards and Jeff Gordon, who finished behind him in Saturday’s race.
“I think it’s cool when Kyle gets the smoke going and all of a sudden he jumps out of the car like David Copperfield,” said Edwards, who uses a trademark back flip following his victories. “It’s pretty neat.”
Gordon, a former teammate of Busch at Hendrick Motorsports said, “He looks like Houdini, man.”
Unruly fans
Darlington Raceway president Chris Browning said he was a little disappointed in the reaction of some of the fans following Busch’s victory.
Some fans threw debris, including beer cans and water bottles at the Joe Gibbs driver during his celebration.
“You don’t like to see that,” Browning said Sunday. “You want fans voice their opinion with their voices. Thankfully, it wasn’t worse than it was.”
Fan of Ford
While Edwards was disappointed about not winning the race, he also wasn’t happy actor Harrison Ford wasn’t there.
Ford’s face was on Busch’s car to promote his new movie, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which comes out May 22. The actor was not scheduled to be in Darlington.
“And where the hell is Harrison Ford?” Edwards asked following the race. “Guy could have showed up. I wanted to talk to him a little bit.”
Moving on up
Gordon and David Ragan benefited the most from their top-five finishes Saturday night.
Gordon, who finished third, moved from 13th to 10th in the standings, while Ragan, who finished fifth, is 12th, his highest points total in his career.
