Lady Panthers fighting for rematch

McBEE – The first two games in the upper state playoffs have brought unusual occurrences for McBee’s varsity softball team. The team lost to Chesterfield 2-1 in a nine-inning game decided by a pass ball, and pitcher Callie Wayne threw a no-hitter against Fox Creek in the second round en route to a 10-0 victory in five innings.

On Saturday, McBee traveled to play region foe Chesterfield in game one of the upper state playoffs. They fell in nine innings 2-1. Neither team ever got anything going offensively.

Caitlin Isgett pitched for the Lady Panthers and gave up one run through seven innings. McBee’s only run in the game came off of a triple by freshman Whitney Hemby. Hemby scored on a throwing error to third base to tie the game in the sixth inning.

Chesterfield won the game however, when a wild pitch from Callie Wayne got away from catcher Kaylie Huggins.

“I thought we played hard, the pitchers did a good job pitching, and we played well defensively,” McBee head coach Donna McCaskill said. “We just didn’t hit the ball. When it gets down to this point, you have to hit the ball and score runs. We just didn’t do that.”

The loss meant a match up with Fox Creek on Monday and a chance to hit the ball.

Callie Wayne took the mound for the Lady Panthers with something to prove – and she proved it. Wayne threw a no-hitter in the five-inning game.

Callie did a good job for us,” McCaskill said. “Of course, she has done a good job for us all season, but she threw very well tonight for us.”

Wayne as supported by one of the Lady Panthers’ best hitting performances of the season. Sydney Teal and Kelsie Amerson both sent homeruns out of the park during the game, and all of the starters got hits in the game. The two homeruns marked the first multi-homer game of the season for the Panthers, according to coaches.

McBee sent Fox Creek home after five innings with a 10-0 loss.

McCaskill was visibly pleased with the effort. “I was proud of the way [the team] came out here tonight,” she said. “They played hard. They hit the ball well tonight, and I think everyone was ready for the game.”

The hitting performance may also be something that the Lady Panthers desperately needed. “I think that’s going to be big for us,” said McCaskill. “We haven’t hit the ball well. We have struggled with that all year long. We hit the ball real well tonight, and hopefully that can carry over.”

McBee now awaits the loser of the game between Chesterfield and Indian Land. The game was to be played Monday, but was postponed due to rain and finished Tuesday night. The Lady Panthers will travel to play the loser of that game tonight.
