The Pee Dee Academy softball team, no stranger to success, had one objective this week -- sweep Dillon Christian.
A pair of wins in the final regular season region game and a victory in a one-game playoff would wrap up the fourth consecutive conference crown for the blue and gold. Pee Dee not only completed their mission, but did so emphatically with a pair of run-ruled routs versus the Warriors.
Game one was a showcase of hitting as the Golden Eagles pounded out 12 in all, led by Alex Powers’ perfect 4-4 day with 3 RBI and 3 runs. Rachel Hester also had a pair of hits and scored three times. Caroline Shelley scored a pair on two hits and drove in two with the game-winning triple in the sixth following a lead-off base hit by Alex Pittman. Christen Bucy went the distance on the rubber, striking out five and scattering 5 hits -- thus, a one game playoff on Friday.
The venue was different as the Warriors hosted, but the result was nearly the same.
Three and a half innings of tight play were substituted for a brutal beating of the Warriors in the final three innings. Pee Dee would plate nine in the final three at-bats to end the 11-1 waxing and to give the Golden Eagles their 32nd win in their last 33 region games and the crown.
Powers again came up large with the stick, slamming a pair of hits and an RBI. Shelley and Hester each came up with the big hits again to back Bucy on the mound in a win in which her stats mirrored the ones from the previous game.
Alex Pittman also stepped up large in the championship contest, demonstrating what senior leadership is all about while playing the catcher position while under the weather.
The win bumps the Golden Eagles record to 22-6 as they finish out the regular season and head to Lexington for the AA State Tournament. Game times on Friday and opponent to be determined.
