Mullins Auctioneer All-Star and Class 2A state player of the year Andrew Crawford has decided to take his skills to Spartanburg Methodist College next season after signing with the school this past Friday. “I’m very excited that I get the opportunity to take my game to the next level and meet new challenges,” Crawford said. The forward said he’s looking forward to improving his all-around game and furthering his education. “I’m glad he’s going to the next level, I hope he does well,” Andrew’s dad Bobby Crawford.
Crawford will be joining the Pioneers basketball team after an outstanding career at Mullins High School that included four trips to the playoffs and an undefeated regular season run in his senior year. Averaging double figures in scoring and rebounding his final two years and gaining recognition as an All-Region, All-State, and South Carolina All-Star, he has shown and proved that he has the game to compete on the next level.
Head coach Mark Gerald said Crawford has grown over the years. “Nobody really knew who he was, he just came out and worked hard,” said Gerald of the humble star. “I think he’s going to go to Spartanburg and do some good things, I’m proud of what he’s done,” he said. Gerald added that the program has four or five kids that can also play in college. “If they go and do well then it would inspire some of these younger kids to do well,” he said. One of those kids already inspired is Andrew’s little brother B.J. The youngster has already spent time starting as a varsity quarterback as a Freshman, along with a region championship playing junior varsity basketball, and lower state final appearance with the 4 x 400 relay team. “He’s influenced me a lot, to always get better whether on or off the court,” he said.
The transition for Crawford shouldn’t be too tough despite spending time as the go-to-guy inside the paint for the Aucs. Crawford has a shooting touch that extends beyond the three point line to compliment his touch scoring inside the paint. Add those attributes to his great rebounding ability, and Crawford will be refining his game in no time.
Enjoying a remarkable career at MHS, Crawford said one reason why his Senior season run to the lower state final was so special, was his motivation to win it all. “I see it as an opportunity to make myself better, right now I’m in the weight room getting stronger for the upcoming challenges,” he said. Crawford can expect his family to behind him every step of the way. “We’re going to be supporting him from the homefront,” said mom Davette, adding, “we’ll be pushing him to remain at the top of his game.”
