Pelicans sink teeth into the Keys

»  Comments | Post a Comment

FREDERICK, MD - Kyle Cofield looked liked an All-Star holding the Keys to only three hits in the 4-1 Pelicans win. The Pelicans three run second inning was all the run support Cofield needed in his first appearance since the California-Carolina All-Star game in Myrtle Beach. The win marks the seventh straight victory for the birds over Frederick.
The Pelicans used an error on third baseman Billy Rowell to start the ballgame to jump on top with two runs in the first inning. Gorkys Hernandez reached on that error and advanced to second base when Jake Arrieta drilled Willie Cabrera with a fastball. A batter later, Eric Campbell doubled off the wall in left field to score Hernandez with the game's first run. Ernesto Mejia followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Cabrera and the Pelicans led 2-0 after a half inning.
The birds increased their lead to three runs in the second as Travis Jones led off with a double and scored a batter later when a ground ball from Phillip Britton was misplayed at first base by Chris Vinyard. The run later became earned as the Pelicans loaded the bases with nobody out, but could do no further damage.
The Keys cut into the lead with a run off of Cofield (6-5) in the third inning. Cofield walked the lead off batter Mike Pierce, and two batters later Pierce scored on a sacrifice fly from Zach Dillon to cut the lead to 3-1.
That was all the Keys would muster against Cofield, who turned in six sterling innings to win for the sixth time. Cofield limited Frederick to just three hits while striking out five and ended his outing by retiring ten straight batters.
Jon Mark Owings launched his 11th home run of the season just over the wall in left field in the fourth inning as the Pelicans got the run right back and reclaimed their three-run lead, 4-1.
Arrieta (5-4) left the ballgame after five innings, conceding four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Arrieta struck out six, but sustained his fourth loss of the season.
Carlos Rivas turned in two scoreless innings of relief to bridge the gap to the ninth inning, and Bryan Dumesnil earned his eighth save of the season by working a scoreless ninth inning.
