WILMINGTON, N.C. — Justice French’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning plated Cory Lyda with the winning run as Wilmington stopped Florence’s six-game winning streak with a 3-2 win Friday night in Coastal Plain League baseball.
Jeremy Berg (1-1) suffered his first loss of the season for the RedWolves. The side-arming right-hander allowed one run on one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief with two intentional walks.
“We were disappointed tonight in our mental preparation for the game,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “Due to a rain delay, we weren’t able to take batting practice. We were out of our routine and it showed tonight.”
USC-Sumter’s Cory Burgess picked up the win for Wilmington (9-11), throwing three scoreless innings of relief for his first victory of the season.
Florence starter Rob Kumbatovic gave up two earned runs on six hits in seven innings. He fanned three batters and walked one.
Myckie Lugbauer and Alec Lowery each had RBI hits for the RedWolves (15-4) in the loss.
Florence is at home tonight against Columbia in a 7:30 first pitch at American Legion Field.
