WILSON, N.C. — For the second time this season, a RedWolves pitcher was scratched prior to a game as Chandler Griffin was pulled prior to Wednesday’s game at Wilson due to shoulder soreness.
And for the second time this season, Barrett Kleinknecht answered the call for Florence.
Kleinknecht allowed one earned run on five hits while striking out five in seven innings as the RedWolves posted a 6-2 win against the Tobs.
“It’s good to finally get the monkey off our backs and win one on the road at Wilson,” Florence coach Wes Davis said. “Barrett competed and threw really well and helped give us some breathing room in the division.”
Wilson (8-9) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. In the RedWolves’ next at-bat, shortstop Justin Beal put Florence on top for good with a two-run double.
“I think Justin’s hit really woke the team and provided that spark that we needed,” Davis said. “He came through with a big hit and the rest of the team followed.”
The RedWolves (14-3) scored two more runs in the fifth inning and chased Wilson starter Thomas Hinson (1-2). Hinson allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Alec Lowrey was 2-for-4 with and RBI and a run scored for Florence. Jamie Walczak was 3-for-4 and scored two runs.
Florence will host Wilson tonight at 7:30 p.m. at Legion Field.
