FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Fayetteville SwampDogs headed into Monday’s game against Florence on fire offensively, scoring a Coastal Plain League-record 53 runs in their last two games.
Maybe they should have saved some of those runs for Florence.
Eight days after tossing a no-hitter against the SwampDogs, Steve Grife shut down the Fayetteville offense again from the mound and benefitted from a six-run sixth inning as Florence earned a 7-1 win at J.P. Riddle Stadium.
The RedWolves are now 5-0 against their rivals this season and sit just two wins away from winning their first I-95 Challenge Cup.
“Every win’s big no matter who it’s against. Our guys are hitting on all cylinders right now,” said Florence coach Wes Davis, whose RedWolves are a league-best 12-3. “We had 11 hits, gave up one run and played an error-free game. Our guys have done a great job doing at least two of those three each game.”
Grife (3-0) gave up his first run of the season, raising his earned run average to 0.43 on the season. The righthander allowed four hits in six innings, walking one batter and striking out five.
With the score tied at 1-1, Florence sent 10 men to the plate en route to scoring six runs on five hits.
Barrett Kleinknecht had three hits, an RBI and a run scored to lead the RedWolves. Blake Walker drove in three runs and Jamie Walczak drew three walks and scored twice.
Keon Graves and Herman Petzold continued their hot hitting, each going 2-for-5.
Patrick Ball (0-1) allowed six runs, all earned, on four hits in just a third of an inning en route to the loss for Fayetteville (7-9). He walked one batter without a strikeout.
Homer’s birthday party
Homer, the RedWolves’ mascot, is celebrating his birthday with the fans during tonight’s game against Gastonia at Legion Field.
Fans can bring pet-care items, such as dog or cat food, to the ballpark and receive half off a general admission ticket to the game.
