MYRTLE BEACH - It was a Fathers Day gift with a sense of nostalgia for 30 dad’s turned baseball players at BB&T Coastal Field. As the ball players participated in the Pelicans first Father’s Day Fantasy Camp.
“It’s great my wife and daughter surprised me yesterday, and what a great chance to come out and play baseball,” said Bill Golden of Murrells Inlet. “It gives us a chance to relive our past glory.”
The Dads’ got the opportunity to act like professionals players out on the field, while wearing the uniform of the fighting feathers. Pelicans Manger Rocket Wheeler was on hand offering up advice and answering guestions from the inquisitive players.
For $100 the Fathers’ received a batting practice jersey and hat, as well as a tour of the clubhouse and stadium. And to top it off, the Pelicans provided lunch for the families and tickets to tonight’s first half season finale against the Salem Avalanche.
“I think it’s terrific for these guys to come in here and see what our kids go through in a day in and day out basis,” said Wheeler. “I would like to see this become a Fathers Day tradition, and if we’re on the road we’ll schedule accordingly.”
While the fantasy camp offered them the opportunity to be ballplayers once again on the field, it was a chance for their children in the stands to see their dads as a hero.
