FMU volleyball team signs four

FLORENCE — The Francis Marion volleyball added four players to its signing class this week.
Outside hitter Ashlee Crook of Parker, Colo., setter/defensive specialist Hallie Legg of Uniontown, Ohio, outside hitter Amanda Mitchell of Knoxville, Tenn., and middleblocker Ardelia Morris of Ocoee, Fla., signed letter of intents to play for the Patriots.
“This is a very athletic and accomplished recruiting class that adds depth to each position on our roster,” FMU coach Paul MacDonald said. “This group really complements the returning squad and will make a great impact on our program both on and off the court.”
Crook who played at Chaparral High School averaged 12.3 kills and 7.8 digs per match, while compiling 36 solo blocks this season.
Legg a graduate of Hoover High School led the team in assists and service points.
Mitchel was named the Player of the Year for both the Knoxville Interscholastic League and District 4-3A, and was chosen to play in the Tennessee East/West All-Star Game after compiling season totals of 496 kills, 247 blocks, and 82 services aces.
Morris was named her team’s MVP this past season and recorded a school-record 353 career kills.

FMU baseball, softball players in final stats
Several FMU baseball and softball players showed up in the final Division II statistical reports released this week.
Senior left-handed pitcher Zach Farry ranked fifth nationally in saves with a school-record 13 and 87th in walks allowed per nine innings with only 2.12. Junior right-handed pitcher David Walters ranked 27th in strikeouts (91), 35th in victories (9), and 66th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.83).
Senior shortstop Greg Phelps ended the year ranked 12th in triples (7) and 25th in triples per game (0.13). Senior center fielder Justin Greene ranked 27th in sacrifice bunts with 11, 35th in sacrifice bunts per game (0.20), and 77th in sacrifice flies (5).
Junior catcher Jared Barkdoll ranked a painful 34th nationally after being hit-by-a-pitch 16 times and 43rd in hit-by-pitches per game (0.30). Sophomore outfielder Trent Knight ranked 85th in triples with four.
In softball, left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf ranked 12th in pitching wins (29) and 48th in earned run average (1.53).
At the plate, junior outfielder Lakyn Bendle ranked 13th in sacrifice hits per game (0.36), senior first baseman Monica Wofford finished 14th in hit-by-pitches per game (0.25) and 84th in runs scored per game (0.89). Wofford was hit 14 times in 2008 en route to setting a new Division II career mark in that category.
Junior third baseman Shannan Tyson ended the year 18th in doubles per game (0.38) and 95th in toughest to strike out. Tyson fanned only 12 times in 220 plate appearances. Junior leftfielder Jessica Birchmeier was listed 98th in runs batted in per game (0.79).
