WILSON, N.C. — Defense and situational hitting are paramount to every team’s chance of success.
The Florence RedWolves got neither of them Thursday night in a 7-3 loss to Wilson.
“We hurt ourselves tonight,” RedWolves coach Wes Davis said. “We didn’t take care of the baseball and we didn’t situationally hit.
“If you don’t do that, you’ll lose everytime.”
Florence (9-3) committed four errors in the contest, ruining a solid outing from Bobby Doran. Doran (1-2) allowed no earned runs on four hits in six innings of work with two strikeouts and no walks.
“Bobby Doran didn’t give up an earned run (against Wilson) tonight,” Davis said. “We kicked the ball all over the place. That cost us big time.”
Ryne Mantooth (1-1) was the ultimate beneficiary of Florence’s defensive issues. Mantooth scattered 10 hits for a complete-game win, his first of the season for Wilson (6-5).
Jamie Walczak and Myckie Lugbauer combined to go 3-for-9 with three RBI to lead the RedWolves.
