No comeback this time for Pelicans

»  Comments | Post a Comment

This time the Pelicans dug in a hole they couldn't climb out of. Myrtle Beach committed two costly errors that led to three first inning runs, and the Lynchburg Hillcats held on to a 5-2 over the home team.
The Pelicans dropped their first series since the third week of May, when they fell victim to Kinston two games to one. Myrtle Beach is still one win from equaling and two wins from breaking the first half franchise wins record of 43 set back in 2002.
It didn’t take long for the Hillcats to crack the scoreboard. Brian Friday led off the game by drawing a walk. After Angel Gonzalez struck out, back-to-back singles by Kent Sakamoto and Jamie Romak loaded the bases. With two outs, Travis Jones booted a slow rolling grounder off the bat of Eddie Prasch to put the Cats on the board. Then, Ryne Reynoso lost a fastball high and tight that plunked Jared Keel on the shoulder to force home the second run. With the bases still full, Tony Mansolino hit a tapper to third that Eric Campbell misplayed, which allowed Jamie Romak to score.
The Pelicans plated a run in the second to cut the deficit to 3-1. Brandon Hicks led off with a single to right-center field. Following a Tyler Flowers strikeout, Travis Jones connected on a chopper up the middle. With two outs, Concepcion Rodriguez laced a line drive double to right field to score Hicks.
Lynchburg added onto their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Steve Lerud started the frame with a single to center. Lerud stole second and was brought home later in the inning on a double to left field by Tony Mansolino. Eddie Prasch, who walked following Lerud’s leadoff double, completed his trek around the bases courtesy of a sacrifice fly off the bat of James Barksdale to stretch the lead to 5-1.
The Pelicans attempted to chip away at the Hillcats lead in the eighth. Eric Campbell roped a double over the head of Jared Keel that scored Willie Cabrera, who reached second on a fielder’s choice and a throwing error by Angel Gonzalez. The Pelicans were unable to get any closer than 5-2.
Pelicans starter Ryne Reynoso (6-4) was hit with the lose in just four innings due to an elevated pitch count. For the first time since May 31st, Ferdin Tejeda made an appearance on the hill and pitched a perfect inning. Carlos Rivas displayed electric stuff in the eighth and nine innings, allowing no hits or runs. Hillcats starter Tony Watson (4-7) was outstanding, earning his first win since May 5th, going 6.1 innings. Christian Castorri did the rest in the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two hits and an unearned run.
The Pelicans will play game one against the Salem Avalanche on Thursday, June 12th at 7:05 p.m. at BB&T Coastal Field. The Pelicans will send RHP Chris Vines (2-0, 3.59) to the mound, while the Avalanche will counter with LHP Douglas Arguello (3-2, 2.89).
