Cary, NC- Coastal Carolina's pitching staff once showed it's lack of depth in their Super Regional Tournament 14-4 loss to North Carolina. Starter Nick McCully lasted only two innings and threw 36 pitches yielding a six run rally to the Tar Heels. McCully's performance comes off a Conway Regional start in which the sophomore right hander allowed a meager two hits in eight innings of work.
The Tar Heels hay maker of an inning started with a Garrett Gore RBI single up the middle. With two on, North Carolina implemented the double steal, Scott Woodwards snap tag at third came up empty handed as he dropped the in time Dock Doyle throw. The Freshman All-American's miscue led to a five run two out drumming. Dustin Ackley and Tim Fedroff both provided 2 RBI singles to pace the overwhelming frame.
Pete Andrelczyk became a bright spot for the Chanticleers in the third and fourth inning. As the fifth round selection of the Florida Marlins retired seven of the first eight batters he faced, two by strikeout. But in the top of the fifth, the wheels came off the bus for the CCU closer. The junior right hander was out of his two inning comfort zone, as he'd surrender four hits for three runs handing UNC a 9-0 lead.
His counterpart on the mound, Darren Warren was rolling through the Chants offense. Not allowing a basehit until the bottom of the fifth, which was only hit because Kyle Seager lost the Tyler Bortnik pop up in the sun. Warren pitched six innings of shutout baseball, stirking out three in the process.
CCU Head Coach Gary Gilmore once again would go to the bullpen, this time in favor of Cody Wheeler. Wheeler would pick up where the rest of his teammates left off, surrendering two more runs.
The Coastal Carolina's bats were still groggy, yet would finally pound out some base hits in the sixth inning, before stranding Scott Woodward and David Sappelt on first and third. It wouldn't be until the Tar Heels would go to their bullpen before the Chants would get on the scoreboard in the eighth. Colin Bates would walk Tommy Baldridge and give up a double to Adam Rice. Tyler Bortnik ripped a two RBI double into leftcenter field putting the Chanticleers on the board. Chance Gilmore would follow it up with a walk, and then two batters later David Sappelt would drive in his only two RBI's of the series on a double down the right field line. CCU down 12-4 would throw in the towel in the ninth when Matt Rein would allow two more runs to score for the 14-4 final.
North Carolina will return to Omaha for thier third College World Series in a row, while the Chants season ends with a record of 50-14.
