FLORENCE — The first game between the Florence RedWolves and Wilson Tobs wound up being a pitcher’s duel, with the Tobs hanging on for a one-run victory.
On Friday at Legion Field, Rob Kumbatovic helped Florence return the favor.
Kumbatovic (1-1) tossed a complete-game shutout, scattering eight hits while striking out four and walking one as the RedWolves blanked Wilson 1-0 to hold on to first place in the South Division.
Wilson starter Ryne Mantooth (0-1) was equally as tough for the Tobs. Mantooth allowed just three hits in eight innings of work while fanning 10 batters.
But Florence (5-1) finally got to Mantooth in the eighth inning. With two outs, Justin Beal was hit by a pitch. Pinch hitter Cody Stinger singled, advancing Beal to third base.
Jamie Walczak followed with a two-out, RBI single to bring home Beal and give Kumbatovic all the runs he needed.
Kumbatovic also pitched out of a few jams in the fifth and sixth innings as Wilson (2-4) stranded seven runners total.
In draft news, no current RedWolves’ player was taken, but nine former Florence players were drafted on Friday.
The RedWolves return to action today when they travel to Thomasville for a 7 p.m. game.
