Deunte Heath went 7 innings without allowing an earned run, as Myrtle Beach topped Winston-Salem 5-2. The Pelicans have now won 13 of their last 14 games.
The Pelicans sprinted to an early lead in the bottom of the first. Gorkys Hernandez led off the game with a single. Hernandez would advance to third by stealing second and taking third on a wild pitch. With two outs in the frame, Ernesto Mejia walked and Travis Jones was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Eric Campbell followed with a bases clearing double to right-center field to give the Pelicans an early 3-0 advantage.
A pitcher’s duel ensued from innings two through five, before the two teams traded runs in the sixth. Javier Colina reached on an error by Willie Cabrera to start the frame. He would later arrive safely at home on an RBI single by Gregory Paiml. Cabrera made amends for his error in the bottom of the inning, by lacing a double to left field to open the inning. A single by Mejia moved Cabrera to third. Then, a bounce out by Travis Jones allowed Cabrera to complete his trek around the bases to give the Pelicans a 4-1.
The Pelicans plated an insurance run in the seventh inning to push their lead to 5-1. Concepcion Rodriguez drew a walk to start the inning. He went from first to third on a slow rolling groundball through the right side of the infield by Jon Mark Owings. Then, Gorkys Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly down the right field line that brought home Rodriguez.
Pelicans starter Deunte Heath earned his eighth win of the season, which ties him with Adrian Alaniz of the Potomac Nationals for the Carolina League lead. In seven innings of work, Heath did not allow an earned run and struck out six batters. Although an admirable six innings of work, Warthogs starter Aaron Poreda was saddled with a tough luck loss.
Gorkys Hernandez had his best game since his return from a hamstring injury. He went 3-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while also stealing two bases.
The Pelicans hit the diamond on Wednesday, June 4th at 7:05 p.m. for game three against the Winston-Salem Warthogs. The Pelicans will send LHP Scott Diamond (2-0, 2.08), while the Warthogs will send RHP Matt Zaleski (3-1, 3.89) to the hill.
