FLORENCE — On Sunday against Fayetteville, the Florence RedWolves’ offense started out strong, putting up four runs in the first inning.
Their pitching staff finished even stronger.
RedWolves starter L.A. Owens and relievers Logan Munson and Tio McLean combined to shutout the SwampDogs through the final four innings as Florence held on for a 6-5 win at American Legion Field.
Florence jumped to a 4-0 lead thanks in part to a Fayetteville error. Jamie Walczak scored on a throwing error with no one out for the game’s first run.
After a fielder’s choice, Myckie Lugbauer, Alec Lowrey and Hermon Petzold all followed with consecutive hits and RBI as the RedWolves took the early advantage.
With the score 4-1 in the top of the third inning, Fayetteville’s Parker Bangs launched a three-run homer off Owens to knot the game at 4-4. Owens allowed five earned runs on seven hits in seven innings with three walks and five strikeouts.
The SwampDogs took the lead in the fifth on Derrick Lowery’s sacrifice fly, but it was short-lived. The RedWolves retook the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning on Brett Thomas’ RBI double and Lowrey’s RBI groundout.
Walczak was 2-for-3, Barrett Kleinknecht was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Lowrey was 1-for-2 with two RBI.
Florence travels to Wilmington today for a 7 p.m. game.
