It may have been exhausted bats from the night beofore, or the stellar pitching performance from Winston-Salem right hander Anthony Carter that rendered the hitting practicly useless in the 11-2 loss. Myrtle Beach pitchers combined to throw a season-high 16 hits to the Warthogs.
The Warthogs jumped on Pelicans starter Jeff Lyman in the first inning. Paulo Orlando led off the game with a double down the left field line. He moved to third on a single to the right side by John Shelby III. Freddie Thon followed with a ground out to first that scored Orlando. Later in the inning, Brett Bonvechio hit a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Shelby III to give the ‘Hogs a 2-0 lead.
After tacking on one in the second, the Warthogs broke the game wide open in the fourth. They sent nine batters to the plate and built a 6-0 lead. Shelby III and Thon connected on run scoring singles. An error by Jon Mark Owings and catcher’s interference contributed to the other two runs.
The Warthogs equaled their production of the fourth inning in the sixth. Salvador Sanchez smoked a double down the left field line to score C.J. Retherford. Later in the inning, Orlando hit an opposite field two run single. The Warthogs went up 11-0 after six innings of play.
The Pelicans managed one run in each the seventh and eighth inning. The offense recorded only seven hits against a combination of three Warthogs pitchers. Jon Mark Owings was the lone Pelican to post a multi-hit game. Warthogs starter Carter took the win in six flawless innings of duty. Carter allowed just three hits. Ricky Brooks and Matt Davis finished the game in mop up roles.
