CONWAY — With the score tied 5-5 in the top of the 12th inning, rain haltedd 5-5 in the top of the 12th inning, rain halted Game 3 of the American Legion baseball playoff series between Florence and Conway.
But it was Post 1’s Brandon Hyman who extended it.
Trailing 5-2 in the eighth inning, Hyman launched a pinch-hit, three-run homer to tie the game and eventually send it into extras.
The game will be completed today at 6:30 p.m. at American Legion Field. Game 4 will be afterwards.
Conway and Florence are tied 1-1 in the best-of-five series.
“We just rolled the dice and thought Hyman gave us a chance,” Post 1 coach Derick Urquhart said. “He’s been swinging a hot bat lately and he came through with a big hit on a full count.”
Two Post 1 errors in the third inning opened the door for three unearned runs by Conway as Post 111 took a 3-1 lead. Tyler Boyd brought Florence back within 3-2 with a solo homer in the fifth.
But Conway added single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to take a 5-2 lead heading into the eighth.
Boyd got the start for Post 1, allowing four runs, one earned, in six innings.
“Tyler’s been mainly a relief pitcher for us, but he kept us in the game tonight,” Urquhart said. “He pitched very effectively, had his curveball working and threw strikes.”
Post 1 tied the series against Conway late Tuesday night with a 12-7 victory.
Andrew Turner struck out 10 batters and allowed five runs on six hits in six innings to pick up the win.
Austin Morrell was 2-for-5 with four runs scored, Keith Branco was 3-for-6 with an RBI and Spencer Jordan was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Lake City-Sumter rained out
SUMTER — Game three between Sumter and Lake City was rained out in the third inning.
The game will be played from scratch today at 7:30 p.m. Sumter leads the series 2-0.
