LAKE CITY — After a rough opening game in its second-round series against Sumter, Lake City looked to cut down on the strikeouts and costly miscues in game two Tuesday.
Unfortunately for Post 73, it was more of the same.
Lake City struck out 16 times, made three errors, and Sumter’s Matt Price drove in six runs as the P-15s routed Post 73 15-3 to take a 2-0 series lead.
Game three is tonight in Sumter at 7:30 p.m.
Sumter jumped to early an lead in the first inning.
After two quick outs, Bruce Caldwell walked and Price launched a two-run homer as the P-15’s took a 2-0 lead.
A single, a walk and an RBI single by Matt Talley increased the advantage to 3-0 as Sumter brought eight men to the plate in the first inning.
Lake City scored its first run of the series in the second inning. Will McCutcheon’s solo shot ended a nine-inning scoring drought for Lake City and brought Post 73 back to within 3-1.
Both pitchers took control after that. Talley allowed just five hits in seven plus innings of work. Lake City continued to have strikeout problems, fanning 14 times against Talley and 33 times during its first two games.
But Post 73 starter Christopher Mishoe was equal to the task. After a shaky first inning, Mishoe retired seven of the next eight batters he faced.
His defense let him down in the fourth inning, With one out and a runner on first, a tailor-made double-play grounder was hit to short. But Chris Lamb bobbled it, failing to get any runner, and Travis Witherspoon made Lake City pay with a two-run double as Sumter took a 5-1 lead.
Mishoe took the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned, on 10 hits in seven plus innings with five strikeouts and four walks
Reggie Weatherford hit another solo home run, but it was the last hit Post 73 recorded against Talley until the eighth inning.
But by that time, the game was too far gone.
Sumter put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning behind Price’s grand slam. Price ended the game 2-for-5 with two homers, and Sumter added two more runs to take an 11-2 lead.
