Pelicans 5 game win streak snapped

MYRTLE BEACH - Miguel Abreu crushed a grand slam home run off the scoreboard in the second inning to give the Keys an early lead over the Pelicans they would never give up.

Myrtle Beach was stiffled down the stretch as Frederick pitchers Brandon Erbe and J.P. Martinez combined to allow just two hits, with a final score of 6-4.

The Pelicans got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first. Gorkys Hernandez drew a leadoff walk. Tyler Flowers was hit by a pitch and Travis Jones followed with a walk to load the bases. Then, Ernesto Mejia sent a flare to left-center field that scored both Hernandez and Flowers to give the Pelicans a 2-0 advantage.

The Keys came right back in the top of the second to vault in front of the Pelicans. After Jeff Lyman recorded two outs, Billy Rowell ignited the Keys with a single. Jason White followed with a double up the right field line. Justin Johnson walked to load the bases. Danny Figueroa drew another Lyman walk to force home Rowell to cut the lead to 2-1.

Then, Miguel Abreu crushed a fastball off the video-board in left-center field to give the Keys a 5-2 edge.

In the fifth inning, the Keys tacked on another run courtesy of a solo homer by Chris Amador into Land Shark Landing.

The Pelicans capitalized on a miscue by the Keys in the bottom of the fifth to inch within two. After Gorkys Hernandez and Willie Cabrera made out, Eric Campbell hit a hard liner off the left wrist of shortstop Jason White to extend the inning for Tyler Flowers. In typical Pelicans fashion, Flowers smoked a two-run home run deep over Land Shark Landing to cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Pelicans never got any closer as Keys pitching combined to completely silence the Pelicans offense. Brandon Erbe earned his seventh win of the season in six solid innings of work. He allowed just two hits and two earned runs, while striking out five. J.P. Martinez picked up a three inning save. The Pelicans did not manage a single hit against Martinez.

Pelicans starter Jeff Lyman was saddled with the loss in four innings of work. He allowed five hits, five runs and four walks. Carlos Rivas was excellent in five innings of relief work. The Venezuela native allowed just three hits and one run. He also recorded four strikeouts without giving up a free pass.
