WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The brooms and the bats were out as the Pelicans posted seven runs in the first three innings on the way to an 8-3 win over the Warthogs. The seventeenth victory for the Pelicans for the second half of the season earned them the series sweep.
As they did in each of the first two games of the series, the Pelicans jumped to an early lead. Myrtle Beach got to Hogs' starter Clevelan Santaliz for three runs in the first inning. Santaliz walked Gorkys Hernandez to start the ballgame, and Willie Cabrera forced Hernandez at second. Eric Campbell followed with a single to put two aboard and Tyler Flowers doubled home Cabrera with the game's first run. Travis Jones then bounced out to score Campbell for a 2-0 Pelicans lead and Ernesto Mejia completed the rally with a single to score Flowers and give the Pelicans a 3-0 lead.
As has been the mold for the series, the Warthogs came right back in the second inning. CJ Retherford led off the inning with a single off of Pelicans' starter Chris Vines and was balked to second base. He scored from there on an Estee Harris double to put the Warthogs on the board, 3-1. Freddie Thon followed a batter later with another double to score Harris and the birds lead stood at a lone run, 3-2.
Myrtle Beach opened the lead back up in the third inning, again off of Santeliz. Campbell contributed a controversial double ruled fair down the third base line which seemed to rattle Santaliz. He walked Flowers, which allowed Flowers to tie the franchise record for single-season walks with his 71st. A batter later, with two aboard, Santaliz hung a breaking ball to Mejia who obliterated it to left field for a three-run home run. The first home run for Mejia since June 17th made it 6-2 Myrtle Beach. Concepcion Rodriguez then swatted the next pitch into the right-center field alley for a triple and scored on a passed ball to run the lead to five runs, 7-2.
Santaliz came back out for the fourth, but after walking two and loading the bases by hitting Gorkys Hernandez he was removed from the ballgame. Matt Zaleski came on to work out of the jam, but it didn't save Santaliz (1-3) from allowing seven runs in 3 1/3 innings and taking the loss.
The Warthogs got to Vines for a lone run in the bottom of the third as Paulo Orlando and Dale Mollenhauer produced back-to-back singles and a batter later Retherford brought home Orlando with a single to cut the lead to 7-3.
Vines (4-1) righted the ship following that run, and ultimately turned in 5 1/3 innings to win for the fourth time. The right-hander allowed eight hits and the three earned runs as he helped the Pelicans to the three-game sweep.
In the top of the ninth inning, Jones took care of one last bit of business, doubling to extend his personal hit-streak to 18 games, which equals Cabrera for the longest streak of the season. His double with the aid of an error on Orland also allowed Campbell to score from first to cap the scoring, 8-3.
Michael Broadway was exceptional in relief, earning his second save of the season by working the final 3 2/3 innings for Myrtle Beach. Broadway allowed just one single while striking out five.
The Pelicans beat Winston-Salem for the 12th time in 14 meetings thus far this season. Myrtle Beach has won all four series between the two clubs.
