WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Pelicans held on to beat the Warthogs 9-7 in a marathon affair which lasted three hours and 44 minutes. Myrtle Beach and Winston -Salem combined for 16 walks along with 24 combined hits, as the Pelicans earned their sixteenth win of the second half.
The Pelicans again jumped on top early, plating four runs off of Hogs' starter John Ely in the second inning. Myrtle Beach loaded the bases with one out, before Gorkys Hernandez rolled an apparent double-play ball to second base. Jon Mark Owings arrived with a take-out slide at second however, altering the throw from shortstop Greg Paiml. His throw sailed errantly, allowing both Travis Jones and Concepcion Rodriguez to score to give the Pelicans a 2-0 lead. Willie Cabrera then stepped in and drilled Ely's first pitch well out of the park to left field to make it 4-0 Myrtle Beach.
Myrtle Beach was at it again, as they chased Ely (3-11) from the game and put up two more runs in the third inning. Tyler Flowers and Brandon Hicks started the inning with back-to-back singles and a batter later Jones doubled into the left field corner to send Ely to the showers and put the Pelicans ahead, 5-0. Jones had already singled earlier in the ballgame to extend his personal hit-streak to 17 games. Michael Dubee came on in relief for the Hogs, but his first pitch was shot into left field by Rodriguez to plate the sixth run of the ballgame for Myrtle Beach.
The Wathogs cut the lead in half with three runs charged to Pelicans' starter Kyle Cofield in the sixth inning. CJ Retherford got Winston-Salem started with a solo home run off of Cofield to left field. A batter later Salvador Sanchez and Freddie Thon contributed back-to-back doubles, with Thon's two-bagger scoring Sanchez to make it a 6-2 ballgame. Cofield was lifted in favor of Carlos Rivas who balked in Thon to cut the lead in half, 6-3.
Cofield worked 5 2/3 innings and earned his seventh win of the year, allowing three earned runs on six hits including Retherford's home run, which was just the second homer Cofield has conceded this season.
The birds put the game out of reach in the eighth as three hits added up to three runs off of reliever Ricky Brooks. The big blow was a two-run double from Eric Campbell which made it an 8-3 ballgame, but Ernesto Mejia added an RBI-double to score Campbell and cap the Pelicans' scoring at 9-3.
The win didn't come without a final charge from the Warthogs however, as they used a combination of two walks, two doubles and a hit batsmen to plate three runs off of reliever Cory Gearrin in the ninth inning. Nick Fellman finally came on to close out the ballgame, allowing an inherited runner to score, but ultimately earning his fifth save of the season.
With the win, the Pelicans claimed the three-game series and also the season-series with the Warthogs, having won 11-of-13 meetings with Winston-Salem thus far this season.
