On Tuesday, Florence RedWolves coach Wes Davis was named coach of the American All-Stars in the Coastal Plain League All-Star game.
Two days later, he found out who would be joining him in Asheboro, N.C. Seven RedWolves were selected to play in next Tuesday’s contest, six to the American team.
Headlining the class is Steve Grife, who was named the American’s starting pitcher. Grife enters the game with a 3-0 record and a 1.66 earned run average in 38 innings pitched with 45 strikeout, 17 walks and two saves.
The right-hander’s signature performance came on June 8 when he no-hit rival Fayetteville, finishing with 12 strikeouts and five walks.
Grife’s Mercyhurst teammate, Jamie Walczak, was also named to the team as a starter. The RedWolves’ outfielder and leadoff hitter is currently batting .312 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 21 RBI. He has also stolen 10 bases in 12 attempts this season.
Hometown product Barrett Kleinknecht is also heading to his first All-Star game as a starter. The former West Florence High and Florence-Darlington Tech standout is batting .306 with a team-leading four homers and 22 RBI.
Myckie Lugbauer will be behind the plate as the starting catcher. The Maine standout is .323 with a team-best 27 RBI this season.
Oufielder Blake Walker was named to the team as a reserve. Along with Lugbauer, the junior from Texas Wesleyan also carries a team-leading .323 average with four triples, 22 RBI and 10 stolen bases.
Setup specialist Jeremy Berg is also heading to Asheboro. The sidearming right-hander is 1-1 with a 0.42 ERA in 21 1/3 innings out of the bullpen with 20 strikeouts and just three walks.
