In his first season as coach of the Florence RedWolves, Wes Davis has infused an aggresive style of play that has put opponents on their heels and garnered adoration from the fans at Legion Field.
On Tuesday, Davis was rewarded for his effort. The RedWolves’ skipper was named coach of the American All-Stars for the Coastal Plain League All-Star game scheduled for next Tuesday in Asheboro, N.C.
“It’s definitely an honor to be selected as coach of the American team in the All-Star game,” Davis said. “I’m delighted to be coaching (the RedWolves) and I’m delighted to be heading to Asheboro.”
Davis guided Florence to the South Division first half title. Entering tonight’s home doubleheader against Columbia, the RedWolves are a league-best 25-10 overall and 5-3 in the second half.
The RedWolves pounded out a season-high 23 hits in an 18-7 beating of rival Fayetteville Monday night, their eighth win without a loss against the SwampDogs this year.
“As I’ve said all season, we’re going to play hard every night,” said Davis, who was an assistant at Wilson before taking the helm in Florence. “There was a little stretch where things weren’t going our way.
“But our team has perservered and it showed (against Fayetteville).”
Davis’ assistant head coach will be Matt Hayes of Forest City, first half champions of the Western Division. Also joining Davis on his staff will be Asheboro’s Tim Murray, Columbia’s Tim Medlin, Outer Banks coach and Francis Marion assistant Robbie Wilson, Wilmington’s Daniel Hersey and Petersburg’s Dave Carfley.
Davis is excited to have Wilson on his staff, along with the other coaches.
“I’ve known Robbie for a couple of years, and he’s a great guy to be around,” he said. “He knows the game and he’s done a great job with Outer Banks and at Francis Marion.
“It’s going to be fun having him around.”
Davis is looking forward to seeing how many of his players will be joining him in Asheboro when the CPL announces its All-Star rosters today.
“We’ve got a lot of guys that are all-star caliber,” he said. “You never know who’s going to make it until they announce (the rosters).
“I think Florence will be well-represented this year.”
