A late, wet night left the Pelicans tired and soggy, but at least happy. Tyler Flowers hit a game-winning home run in the bottom of the 8th, leading the Birds to a 10-9 victory over the Avalanche on Friday night. The game was supposed to be a double-header due to Thursday's rainout, but a two and a half hour rain delay forced the teams to only play one.
The Pelicans grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first as Eric Campbell connected on a towering home run into Land Shark Landing. Ernesto Mejia followed with a single. Two batters later, Tyler Flowers laced a double to left field that scored Mejia to give the Pelicans a 2-0 edge.
In the second, the Pelicans erupted for five runs. With the bases loaded, Willie Cabrera rocketed a three-run double down the left field line to give the Pelicans a 5-0 edge. Then, Eric Campbell blasted his second home run of the game to stretch the lead to 7-0.
The Avalanche started on the comeback trail in the third. Brian Bogusevic hit a leadoff solo home run the opposite way into Land Shark Landing.
In the fourth, the Avalanche trimmed the lead to 7-3 courtesy of a two-run homer by Collin DeLome.
After the Pelicans scored one run in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-3, the Avalanche plated four runs in the top of the sixth. Tim Torres started the frame with a triple to the right field corner. Then, Mark Ori hit a home run over the right field wall to cut the deficit to 8-5. Later in the inning, Collin DeLome notched a single to center that scored Koby Clemens. Then, Collin DeLome came into score on a sacrifice fly by Roberto Mena that inched the Avs within one.
The Avalanche stole the lead away from the Pelicans in the top of the eighth. Jordan Parraz hit a single to right field that scored Jhon Florentino and Roberto Mena to give the Avalanche a 9-8 edge. Jon Mark Owings misplayed the hard grounder, allowing Mena to score the go-ahead run.
In the bottom of the eighth, Brandon Hicks drew a one-out walk to again set the stage for Tyler Flowers. The Pelicans catcher crushed the eventual game-winning home run off the top of the BB&T Coastal Field scoreboard to give the Pelicans a 10-9 lead.
Nick Fellman picked up his second save in as many games by pitching another perfect ninth inning. The loss was saddled on Bryan Hallberg, who allowed the game-winning long
