CONCORD, N.C. —Kyle Petty doesn’t understand what all the griping from teams and drivers is about the Car of Tomorrow.
The COT, which was run in a limited schedule last season, will be run in all 36 races and has been met with skepticism and opposition from some throughout the garage area for the way it handles.
“It’s our job to take this car and put on a good show for the fans and we should able to do it with a YUGO or a Freightliner truck,” Petty said. “If we are that good, we should be able to do. So we need to shut up and go make it work.”
Yarborough fan
Jimmie Johnson has always been a big fan of Sardis native Cale Yarborough.
This year, Johnson has a chance to do something his idol did — win three straight championships. Yarborough is the only driver to accomplish that feat when he won titles from 1976-78.
“I remember growing up in Southern California and watching him on TV drive the Hardees No. 28. He was the man,” Johnson said. The fact Cale is the only one who has done it speaks for itself. I certainly hope I could make it two.”
Still bumming
Mark Martin still hasn’t forgotten finishing second in last year’s Daytona 500.
Martin was leading with two laps to go before Kevin Harvick passed him on the final lap to win by .02 seconds.
“It is incredible to think you can get that close and not get it done,” said Martin, who is winless in 23 Daytona 500 tries. “But we are going to go back down there and roll the dice as big as we can to get it done.”
No turning back
Dale Jarrett said Wednesday there is no chance he will reconsider not to step out of the car following the race at Bristol on March 25.
Jarrett, who also will run in the Sprint All-Star race, will begin his broadcast career with ESPN/ABC. David Reuitmann, who will drive the first five races in the No. 00 car, will replace Jarrett in the No. 44 car.
Former ARCA and Rolex Series driver Michael McDowell will replace Reutmann in the No. 00 car.
They said it
“I’m living the American dream. I grew up in a trailer park and now I’m a Nextel Cup champion. It’s been a wild ride.”
