JOHNSONVILLE - Rachel Gaster, Johnsonville High School junior, has been selected as the SCCAWS ("South Carolina Coaches Association of Women's Sports") Class A Tennis Player of the Year.The SCCAWS will honor Rachel at the Player of the Year Luncheon which is to be held in Columbia on January 18, 2009.
Rachel was also selected by the SCHSL ("South Carolina High School League") for the fourth consecutive year to represent the Golden Flashes Lady Tennis Team as the Single A player at their Columbia tournament; however, the tournament was rained out and not rescheduled this season. Regulations governing this honor mandated that Rachel qualify as the number one seed and player in her Region.
Rachel has been the number one seed since her eighth grade year at Johnsonville Middle School. In addition, she has been named M.V.P.every season, All State Individual, and All Region. During the tennis off-season, Rachel pitches for Flashes' Varsity Softball where she was named an All State player during the 2008 season.

In addition to her tennis and soft ball, she maintains the grades to be a High Honor Student and member of the Johnsonville High School Beta Club.
"Of course," states Coach/Mom, "she also enjoys being a typical 17-year-old girl, who enjoys spending time with friends, talking on the phone, and attending Clemson games with her family."
Rachel plans to attend Clemson University and major in Sports Medicine.
Rachel is the daughter of Thomas and Paige Gaster. She is the paternal grandaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Lewis Gaster of Hemingway.
She is the maternal grandaughter of Louise A. Newell and the late Harry W. Newell of Hemingway.
