Pee Dee Academy splits games with King's Academy

Pee Dee Academy basketball teams had their final games before the Christmas break this past week and welcomed a King's squad to Mullins that was much like themselves.
King's came in with one squad struggling to find themselves and one who simply wears their opponents down and doesn't let up until the final buzzer.

The girls win

The Lady Golden Eagles have picked up where they left off in the '07-'08 season, racking up seven wins in their first eight games, leading up to their date with the Lions. The King Academy's girls have struggled from day one against Pee Dee, having yet to gain a victory in the match up.

Brittany Ellis started off the fireworks just 10 seconds in, canning a long jumper. Thirteen of the next 14 would come from the hands of Jeffre Rogers or Kelsey Dozier, as Rogers followed up misses for a pair of hoops and converted a steal into another. Dozier went up and under down low and took a beautiful feed from Katherine Rogers for a basket on the post.

Taylor Williams put one in on a pull-up and nailed three of four from the charity stripe in the second quarter. Ellis ended the half in style on a steal and lay-in and the Golden Eagles had this one put away by the half with a 30-3 lead.

In the second half, Pee Dee pulled off the gas, but added to their lead. Dozier, Ellis and Jeffre Rogers scored again and Ginni Reaves McMillan got herself on the board with a score from the box. A Kali Jacobs bank shot finished off the 50-12 dismantling of the Lions that ran the Golden Eagles record to 8-1 and 2-1 in region play.

On the day after Christmas, the Lady Golden Eagles will participate in the tournament at South Florence High School and will face defending 3A State Champion, Myrtle Beach in the opener at 3 p.m.

The boys lose

Basketball Coach Jerry Coleman's boys will probably welcome the Christmas break. The pre-holiday schedule saw them come into the match-up with King's at 1-7. And, like the games before it, they got behind the eight-ball early, but hung in for the first half.

Charlie Fincannon gave Pee Dee the early lead with a free throw. But by the time Bradley George hit a pair of charity shots and a three-pointer they were down 14-6. And, by the time he hit his next three, the Lions' lead was 19-9. Ed Pittman would hit a driving bank shot that cut the lead to 21-11 in favor of King's after one.

Pee Dee climbed back into the contest in the second quarter and Pittman scored again underneath with Fincannon scoring on a lay-in. Cody Gibson would hit a free throw and suddenly the lead was only five and 21-16.

But, from there, the offense would come hard for the Golden Eagles.

They would find themselves down by eight at the half and could manage only seven after the break, falling by a 55-25 score. George led the way for the Golden Eagles with 8.

When they return from the Christmas break, Pee Dee's boys will play Trintiy on Jan. 6 at home.
