Darlington High School’s girls’ varsity basketball team defeated the Hartsville Lady Foxes Friday night in the first of two games between the talented rivals. Darlington won by a score of 63-61.
The Lady Falcons trailed at the beginning of the fourth quarter but used efficient three-point shooting to bridge the gap. They scored in the final seconds on a Hartsville turnover.
Both coaches said on Monday that the game was a good one.
“It was nip and tuck all the way through,” Darlington head coach Brian Rozzell said. “It’s a shame that somebody had to lose.”
Rozzell said he is very pleased that his team fought throughout the entire game. “For them not to give up when we were down by six, and Hartsville was playing well shows that we are on the right road.” Rozzell said the game was a pleasure to watch.
Darlington was led by Jazz Green, who scored 21 points. Kierra Patterson added 14, and Shebria Jett had 12 points for the Lady Falcons.
“I thought it was a pretty good game,” Hartsville head coach Pat Hewitt said. “That was two good basketball teams. We just didn’t execute at the end.”
Hewitt said she felt the Lady Foxes had several opportunities to win the game, but they failed to capitalize. “We played a well-coached team,” she said. “You know its interesting game when (the final score is) 63-61.”
Jasmine Phillips led the Foxes and all scorers with 27 points. Kiasiah Ham followed with 17 points, and Emily Jackson put up 11.
Darlington improves to 2-0 on the season and will travel to play South Florence Thursday, Dec. 11, at 6 p.m.
Hartsville’s record is even at 1-1. They hosted Marlboro County Tuesday night and will host Darlington in the rematch Friday night at 6 p.m.
