Mullins Auctioneer basketball star Stacy Wilson has been a valuable contributor since his freshman year. Now the senior shooting guard wants to step up his role as a leader for the Aucs basketball team. Wilson is up front when he states that he wants to be the best basketball player he could be, and desperately wants to help what he calls a great team with great players accomplish the goal of winning a state championship.
During the offseason, Wilson has been quite busy preparing for what might be the most important season of his young career. “I’ve just been playing AAU basketball and staying in the gym. It was a great experience for the team and for me to head into the playoffs undefeated,” he said. However, Wilson mentioned that he recognized there was a big difference in the playoffs because the teams are better and stronger.
“I learned a lot of things to help me become a better player so when that time comes again, I will not let my team down, but know what to do in game situations,” he said, remembering that he fouled out of the lower state final game. “I will always remember that game everyday at practice.
To improve and possibly get over the hump, Wilson said it will take teamwork and perfecting every aspect of the game. “I have to do more, like helping out the team in rebounds, defending, and putting up points. One of the area’s most prolific scorers is focusing on becoming a better defender. However, with dreams of playing college basketball, grades has been getting just as much attention, he said. Radford University, Francis Marion University, S.C. State, Gardner-Webb University, and Davidson have all shown interest, with Wilson mulling over offers as the season tips-off this week. Wilson plans to major in business and thanks Head Coach Mark Gerald for aiding in his development as a player and individual.
Coach Gerald is a very good man. He will do things that no other coach would. I love my coach and wouldn’t trade for any other in the world, because he has been there for me and is always on my back about everything, making the person I am today,” Wilson.
Wilson has a style of play all to his own, and is well aware of the criticism he may receive at times. “I hear them, but I don’t let it get to me. I don’t talk too much; I just let my game do the talking. Opponents will hear that game loud and clear this season. “I’m ready to show my skill and show people that I can play at a high level.”
