FLORENCE — Through the first quarter and a half of Friday’s game against South Florence, West Florence coach Trey Woodberry watched his offense stall after shooting itself in the foot on a number of occasions.

But fortunately for the Knights, Avery Murray and the running gave them a shot in arm soon after.

Murray had two carries on offense, each accounting for touchdowns, as West Florence rushed for 346 yards and had a stellar defensive performance to earn its eighth straight win over South, 42-6 at Memorial Stadium.

“We moved the ball rather well, we just kept shooting ourselves in the foot, and I hate to keep saying that,” Woodberry said. “We had an interception and few fumbles that we might not have lost, but it did hurt us in field position.

“But our kids settled down and played well after that. I think that run by Avery relaxed us and we showed we had a little bit of offense after that.”

Murray broke a scoreless tie with an 80-yard touchdown run with 7:18 left in the first half. The score opened the floodgates for the Knights, who went up 17-0 at the half and led 27-6 after three quarters.

Murray, Terance Gamble and Leon Richardson each had touchdown runs of 50 yards or more. Murray led the team with 107 yards and two scores while Gamble had 97 yards and a touchdown.
The win came despite four West Florence turnovers and six trips by the Bruins into Knights territory.

“The game got out of hand at the end, but we’re close to where we want to be,” Bruins coach Lynn Fleming said. “There were a lot of mistakes we made that we can correct. We made some good plays in the passing game and took advantage of some things.

“Some of the plays we wish we could have back, but we’ll take the positives with the negatives and watch the film and see what needs to be done.”

One of the big positives for the Bruins came in the third quarter on Terrion Brown’s 2-yard touchdown run. The TD snapped a two-game scoreless streak for the Bruins against their cross-town rivals.

South rushed for just 87 yards and had 161 through the air. Quarterback Troy Jones completed 10 of 27 passes for 163 yards. All but three of his completions went for at least 10 yards.

“We’re young in the secondary, and we got beat deep a few times, but we’ll get some more reps in and correct that,” Woodberry said.

Nathan Gasque led the Knights defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Justin Bostick and Murray each had six tackles and Bostick also intercepted a pass.
