BANNDER ELK, NC – Sophomore Lee Squires scored three goals to lift Lees-McRae College to a season-opening 4-2 victory over Francis Marion University, Friday night (Aug. 29) in men’s soccer action.
Sophomore Ivan Juric and junior Kyle Clinton scored the two FMU goals.
In the eighth minute, Squires took a ball down the far side of the field and found the back post to give the Bobcats a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 through the end of the first half. Immediately after the halftime whistle, in the 46th minute, Logan Linton's cross found a sliding Kyle McGimsey to extend the Bobcat lead to 2-0.
Squires second goal extended the Bobcat lead to 3-0 when he ripped a shot into the bottom of the net in the 59th minute. He notched his third goal in the 71st minute on a header to the near post off another cross from Linton to make it 4-0.
The Patriots answered in the 76th minute when Juric took an Emerson Peredo cross and ripped a shot from just outside the 18-yard box to make it 4-1.
Clinton cut the lead to 4-2 in the 87th minute when he scored on a free kick.
Francis Marion will play at Lenoir-Rhyne College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
