CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) _ In a perfect world, Clemson coach Tommy Bowden would open the season with an opponent less powerful than 24th-ranked Alabama.
Bowden said Tuesday he's no different from most coaches who might like a warmup to gauge their team's readiness. Instead, No. 9 Clemson will face the Crimson Tide on Saturday at the Georgia Dome.
Bowden thinks this week's outcome, win or lose, will point his team in the right direction. He said if they had faced a lesser team, then potential problems might remain undetected and cost the Tigers further down the schedule.
