Bottom line
J.R. Boyd left an indelible mark on the Lamar football program in his first tenure there, capturing three straight Class A state titles.
Now, he begins anew.
The Silver Foxes return 11 seniors, eight of which will be starters, from a team that went 10-3 and made it to the Class A Division 1 lower state championship game.
But, Boyd said, there’s still a lot of work ahead.
“It mainly comes down to blocking and tackling, and we’re still not where we need to be on either right now,” Boyd said. “We’re behind right now, and that’s something we’ll need to correct before (our first game).”
The Silver Foxes suffered a big loss at quarterback with Tyler Boyd’s graduation and are still working things out at that position.
Lamar returns and solid running back in Jonothan Dargan and has a solid offenisve line anchored by JaQuavis McClain, Reece Poole and Garris Amerson.
After a tough start against Cheraw, Lamar plays just one team (Scott’s Branch) who had a winning record last season, and just three who were .500 or better.
