Bottom line
The Wildcats lost a lot of talent from a 10-2 squad of a year ago.
Only about three or four starters from each side of the ball are back, Hayes said, giving the Wildcats a lot of unproven talent to build with, especially on offense.
Damien Sowells departs after playing quarterback, returning punts and playing just about any position Dillon needed him to. They also lost two of his favorite targets in Dwan Byas and Quinn McCollum.
Dillon does return a reliable back in Roderick Jackson and an All-Pee Dee linebacker in L’Twane Thompson.
The Wildcats also have the added pleasure of facing the two-time defending Class 2A state champion Cheraw earlier in the season, as the Braves are now in the Wildcats’ region. Cheraw has knocked Dillon out of the playoffs for two straight seasons.
“We lost quite a number of players who had been playing for us for quite a while,” Hayes said. “We have a tremendous challenge ahead of us, but I’ve liked what I’ve seen out of the team so far in terms of work ethic and teammwork that we’ve seen so far. We’re really looking forward to the start of the season.”
