J.R. Boyd is back in Black and Silver. The Silver Foxes have their championship coach, but many other questions remain as they prepare for their Week Zero opener against Cheraw.
Lamar failed to make the state championship game in any of Charlie Poole's three seasons at the helm. That's a failure at Lamar, and he was replaced by Boyd, the coach that led Lamar to three state title victories earlier this decade.
Boyd spent last season as an assistant on the team, leading his son Tyler in his senior year. But Tyler's departure to play baseball at Francis Marion has left a gaping hole at quarterback. Boyd says competition is open between three underclassmen - Eric Daney, Mark Smith and Trevor Norris. Boyd says Daney has the lead, but he would be comfortable putting any of them under center.
At this point of the preseason, Boyd says his team is still "soft". That's a bad thing to begin with, but it's compounded by the fact that this year's team does not have the speed of Boyd's earlier teams this decade. Boyd's expecting to play a grinding style, as long as the Silver Foxes get tougher. It's not only Boyd that's depending on it, but the Lamar family - who demonstrated this offseason that they don't take losing lightly.
