Glavine will pitch Monday for Pelicans

The most decorated and accomplished player ever to suit up for the Pelicans will pitch Monday. Future Hall of Fame left-hander Tom Glavine will make a rehabilitation start for the Pelicans as they host the Kinston Indians at BB&T Coastal Field.
Glavine, who is attempting to return to Atlanta after landing on the Disabled List on June 11th with a partial flexor tendon tear in his pitching elbow, immediately becomes the most accomplished player to ever don a Pelicans uniform. He will follow fellow left-hander Mike Hampton and Braves’ right-handed reliever Jeff Bennett, who have already rehabbed with the Pelicans during their historic 2008 season.
The 42-year old, who is 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 12 starts this season, boasts a Hall of Fame pedigree by any standard. The left-hander is one of just 23 pitchers with 300 wins in his career, posting five 20-win seasons in a 22-year Major League career. The 10-time National League All-Star (1991, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006) and two-time National League Cy Young Award winner (1991, 1998) was awarded Most Valuable Player honors as the Braves won the 1995 World Series. He has also led the National League in wins five times (1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, 2000).
“Obviously as fans of baseball ourselves, we are ecstatic to give our outstanding fan base the chance to watch one of the greatest pitchers of all-time right here in Myrtle Beach,” said Pelicans’ General Manager North Johnson. “Glavine is not only a first-ballot Hall of Famer, but also one of the true ambassadors of the game of baseball.”
Glavine’s start represents a dedication from the Braves to send their biggest stars for rehabilitation assignments on the Grand Strand. Hampton, Bennett and Glavine are the first Braves to rehab with the Pelicans since Marcus Giles and DeWayne Wise both spent a portion of the 2004 season in Myrtle Beach.
