Four local teams get at least a share of region title.

The 2008 spring sports season has certainly brought quite a bit of press coverage and notoriety to the area due to the sharp play of several local teams. The area has three, possibly four, region champions. Hartsville has a share of the Region VI AAAA title; Lamar won the Region 7 Class A title, and Darlington softball has finished as the Region V AAA champion. McBee faced Indian Land Tuesday night at Andrew Jackson High School for a tiebreaker to decide the Region 3 A champion. All region champions are awarded home field advantage for the beginning of the playoffs.

The Hartsville varsity baseball team has been ranked number one throughout most of the season, and still is, and they will begin the playoffs as Class AAAA Region VI co-champions. They finished the season 17-5 overall and 7-1 in region play.

The Red Foxes share the title with region rival Conway. Both teams suffered one loss in region play. Those losses were to each other. A series of tiebreakers determined their seed in the playoffs, and the Foxes received a number two seed. They will play Wando at Jimmy White Park Thursday night.

“I think it’s great considering the region we are in,” Hartsville head coach Jacob Shumate said. “Any kind of champion in this region is one heck of an accomplishment.” Shumate also said the Foxes are confident going into the playoffs. “The guys have been here before, and they know what it takes to win it,” he said.

The Darlington Lady Falcons softball team has done nearly the same. They remained either number one or number two throughout most of the year and have clinched the Region V AAA title with a 10-0 record in region play.

The McBee Lady Panthers softball team has been consistently ranked in the top three in Class A softball, and the ladies traveled to Kershaw to battle Indian Land in a tiebreaker to decide the Class A Region 3 champion on Tuesday. McBee and Indian Land spilt the two-game series in the regular season and both remained undefeated otherwise in region play.

Lamar’s Silver Foxes baseball team finished a perfect 8-0 in region play and brought home a region title in Class A Region 7. “It feels pretty good,” head coach J.R. Boyd said. “They played well all season. Those guys came up big in big situations. It feels great to win with the group we have.”

The Lamar softball team, Hartsville softball team, Darlington baseball team, McBee baseball team and both the baseball and softball teams from Emmanuel Christian School plan to make appearances in the 2008 state playoffs.
