Bruins rout Wilson

»  Comments | Post a Comment

South Florence’s baseball team entered Wednesday’s matchup with Wilson needing a win to keep pace with West Florence for the final playoff spot in Region 6-4A.
The Bruins did that as Spencer Jordan tossed a one-hitter and South pounded 13 hits in the 13-0 win over the Tigers in five innings.
It was South’s second win over the Tigers in three days. The Bruins beat Wilson 10-0 on Monday.
South Florence finished the season at 11-12 and needs a loss by West in one of its final two games to have a chance at
the postseason.
“We’ve done all we can,” Gray said. “Now we have to wait for the dust to settle and see if we’re in the playoffs.”
In possibly his final game, Jordan confounded the Tiger for most of the game. The senior fanned seven batters in the complete-game victory.
“We knew we had to get outs and win the game to give us any chance of making the playoffs,” Jordan said. “If my team made the plays behind me, I knew we’d win and we did.”
“(Jordan) pitched well today,” Gray said. “This is his second straight good outing. We came through with the sticks for him as well.”
The loss was the third straight blowout defeat for the Tigers, who ended the regular season with an 11-9 overall record and a No. 2 seed in the Class 3A playoffs.
Wilson was outscored 37-1 in two losses to South and one to West this week.
But coach Rodney Barr said morale is nowhere near where it needs to be at this time.
“The only thing we can hope is that we’ve got all the bad things out of our system. Hopefully, we can start playing better baseball,” Wilson coach Rodney Barr said. ““All we can do is have a short-term memory and move on. We have to play better because if we continue to play like this, we’ll have a short stint in the playoffs.”
Leading 6-0 in the top of the third, Wilson’s Brandon Baggette walked Justin Green with the bases loaded to force home a run and increase the Bruin lead to 7-0.
A Jimmy Hampton sacrifice fly gave South an 8-0 advantage heading into the next frame.
Brandon Hyman went 2-for-3 with a first-inning home run and three RBI to lead the Bruins. Blake Miller, Tyler Cooper and Dustin Garand also had two hits to lead South Florence.
